Some other assorted high school fragments
These are a few smaller and shorter fragments from Year 9, but ones which I still like a lot!
Jazzy thing
I really don't have an awful lot of memories about this one, but an interesting thing is that the piano 'riff' in the first part is something which I can still play to this day!
Respect
The original (vocal) part of this fragment, I think is probably from around Mar 1997 or so, I think after I'd recently been to the Folk Festival... I think I'd always had in mind really 'Folk Festival-ish' violin parts for this, which I've tried to realise much later on!!
Lyrics:
Respect your brothers, respect your friends
Respect your mother till your life ends
"Dream song"
I don't remember an awful lot about this one... as the name suggests, I think it probably occurred to me in a dream (it'd be from early 1997), and as a bit of trivia, the opening piano introduction is new!
Lyrics:
Wouldn’t it be nice if you loved me
Wouldn’t it be nice if you cared
You’ve lost your girl, and now it hurts far too much
Another Cool Jazzy Thing
My main memory of this, is that it came to me while I was sitting with a friend in the back seat of my Mum's Ford Laser, possibly on the way to the folk festival or something (again, probably Mar-Apr 97)!
"I Will be the Watcher"
This was one of the first fragments I wrote in the overseas school trip to Indonesia in 1997 (written on the bus)...I think the lyrics are, part rip-off of the Beatles' "Mother Nature's Son", and also part cribbed from Dr Who (where there's an episode that has "The Watcher")!! Despite that, this is one I like a lot, and the instrumental music is new!
Lyrics:
I will be the watcher, singing songs, all day long for you
"Way Cool Trip"
This is a fragment written in the same overseas school trip that I mentioned in my description of "Tell the Truth", written very late in the trip (on a ferry) - it had no words at the time!!
Lyrics:
A startling lie is snatched beneath our souls
...
And I would never take our vowed oath
Fall from Grace (high school version)
I think this fragment dates from around August 1997... I kind of remember that I wrote it whilst we had dancing at school, and I think the "Fall from Grace" title referred to falling from grace with people in my school (especially during dancing) after that tumultuous overseas trip... the words are new though!
Lyrics:
World’s collapsing, falling in, can’t know if I’ll sink or swim
Depth no limit to going low, but I don’t think I’ve been this far in
And the falling knows no end, no sign of ones loved or those who'd not come back
Silently pray for deliverance, as God’s wrath sends me to journey’s end
Minds
This is a favourite fragment of mine, possibly from around Aug 1997... an interesting thing about the chord change just after the second line "Your my mind and my mind", is that one of my friends had recently introduced me to Faure's "Pavane", and I think this chord change is heavily inspired by it!!
Lyrics:
Your mind, and my mind, always go together
Your mind, and my mind...
Yellow Rose (high school version)
As I'd said in the description for this song on my main collection, this was written on a bus on the way back from a school band tour, I think around Sep 97, and I think the title came about because there was some 'kerfuffle' with a particular girl on this tour (I believe I made a Secret Santa not so secret, or some such), for whom I bought a yellow rose to sort of 'make things up'!!
Lyrics:
Rose, yellow rose, I think the time for love has come
Show us how we can be one with you our rose
Love shows the way, and from now on we can start believing it’s true
That in the end love saves the day
When all’s said and done our time is over
But I’m not saying goodbye just yet
I’ll leave this world with only a hint of regret
